A return to walking

I restarted my morning walks today by doing a leisurely 1.2 miles in 25 minutes. Yes, rather slow. I ended up skipping last week due to work deadlines. But, in fact, the walk this morning helped to refocus my mind.  I was working out 2 issues today and the walk helped me to focus and formulate a few options.  This explains why I stopped listening to music on the iPod – the music was a distraction.

I skipped walking last week for all the wrong reasons.  I had too much on my plate and couldn’t even take 30 minutes for myself.  My cat likes to wake me at the crack of dawn to be let out and this disrupts my sleep.  Today, I was thinking of skipping again but rather than over-thinking about it, I dressed for the walk and decided to meditate on my current issues.  It worked!  This explains why  a person like me who hates exercises, actually enjoys shoveling snow and on occasion even raking  leaves.  These activities are meditative  due to their repetitive nature.  So, I need to think of walking as not exercise but as meditation.

I’m writing about this training to prepare for the Walk for Hunger next May because I need to be accountable to someone other than me.  So dear reader, write me a comment if you enjoy this or if you want to share your struggles and challenges with exercise, a new project or juggling too many tasks.  If the comments are positive then I’ll publish them!  🙂

Maybe the walking should be the given of the day like brushing your teeth or having lunch. Everything else could be fit in around it. 🙂

  2. Agree with you Moitri. I need to stop over-thinking.
